About Targeted CE

Throughout your career as a Registered Technologist (R.T.) and/or Registered Radiologist Assistant (R.R.A.), you’ll need to complete continuing education (CE) activities to obtain and maintain your credential(s).

When completing structured education and CE prescribed for CQR, you must complete targeted CE. That means the activities must align directly with the content outline, which lists the knowledge and skills needed to perform tasks associated with each discipline. By ensuring that CE activities correspond with these outlines, we help you choose educational activities that relate directly to the disciplines in which you work.

Content outlines can be found in the following documents: Examination Content Specifications, Structured Education Requirements, and CQR SSA Content Specifications.

TARGETED CE EXAMPLES

Structured Education Requirements

When pursuing a credential using the postprimary eligibility pathway, you must complete 16 hours of structured education that:

  • Reflects the content specifications for the discipline you’re pursuing
  • Includes at least one credit from each of the document’s major content categories (the remaining hours may be earned from any one or more of the content areas)

The major content categories may include any or all of the following:

  • Patient Care
  • Safety
  • Image Production
  • Procedures

CQR Requirements

If you receive a CE prescription as part of CQR, the prescription will require activities from content subcategories

For example, if you hold a CT credential, after completing CQR you could receive a CE prescription in any or all of these subcategories:

  • Patient Care
    • Patient Interactions and Management
  • Safety
    • Radiation Safety and Dose
  • Image Production
    • Image Formation
    • Image Evaluation and Archiving
  • Procedures
    • Head, Spine, and Musculoskeletal
    • Neck and Chest
    • Abdomen and Pelvis

The exact major content categories, subcategories, and the number of credits required are different for each discipline. (An MRI technologist, for example, needs to know different safety strategies than a radiographer does.)

CREDIT DISTRIBUTIONS

When CE sponsors, Program Directors, and educators submit CE activities to ARRT, we review their submissions and assign a credit distribution to those activities. Credit distributions:

  • Identify activity content that aligns with ARRT's content outlines.
  • Divide CE credit appropriately into the discipline-specific content categories and subcategories.
  • Clarify the exact (targeted) content category and subcategory requirements a course or activity will fulfill.
