Get Started on Your I.A.(MR) Clinical Competency Requirements

We anticipate the Imaging Assistant (I.A.) tool will be available in summer 2026. The tool is where you'll document your clinical competencies and structured education, and track your progress toward applying for the exam.

While you wait for the tool, you may be able to get a head start working on your magnetic resonance (MR) clinical competency requirements. Please read these instructions before you begin.

First, Find a Clinical Site and Verifier

One major requirement for earning an I.A.(MR) credential is completing clinical competency requirement. That means you must perform and document a specific number of clinical activities that are related to magnetic resonance in a clinical setting, such as a:

  • Hospital
  • Imaging center
  • Medical clinic

Each clinical activity you complete must be verified by a qualified person, and there are specific requirements about who can verify them:

General patient care procedures
Can be verified by an ARRT certified and registered technologist (any discipline) or an ARRT certified and registered Imaging Assistant, Magnetic Resonance.

MRI safety requirements, MRI positioning and anatomical landmarking, and MRI quality control tasks
Can be verified by an ARRT certified and registered MR technologist or an ARRT certified and registered Imaging Assistant, Magnetic Resonance.

MRI safety requirements
Can also be verified by a certified and registered MRSO, MRSE, MRMD (ABMRS), or the designated facility MR medical director.

  • IF YOU’RE ALREADY WORKING AS AN MRI IMAGING ASSISTANT
You probably work with a person who meets these qualifications and can verify your clinical competency activities.
  • IF YOU'RE NOT CURRENTLY WORKING IN THIS FIELD
You may need more information about how to find a clinical site and a qualified person to verify your activities for you. Here are some recommendations to help you get started.

Next, Start Completing and Documenting your Clinical Competencies

Once you've found a hospital, imaging center, or other clinical location, and you've secured a qualified clinical verifier, you'll be ready to start completing your clinical competency activities. Use the I.A.(MR) Clinical Competency Requirements document linked below to log your activities. (It's important to keep a good record of your activities because you'll need to record these in the I.A. documentation tool when it becomes available.)

  • Clinical Competency Requirements

You'll have 24 months from the date of your first clinical competency or structured education activity completion to apply for the I.A.(MR) exam.

    • Until you apply for the exam, any logged activities that exceed the 24-month timeframe will automatically expire.
    • Once you apply for the exam, and are assigned an exam window, your clinical competency activities are locked in and will not expire.
