ASRT Foundation Scholarships Honor Legacies of Two Radiologic Science Leaders; Made Possible by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists

Two scholarships have been established by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and offered through the ASRT Foundation in memoriam of two influential leaders whose contributions helped transform the medical imaging and radiation therapy profession.

The Dr. Mattie Tabron Entry-level Radiation Therapy Scholarship and the Bettye Wilson Entry-level Medical Imaging Scholarship posthumously honor ASRT Life Members Mattie Tabron, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(T), FASRT, and Bettye Wilson, M.A. Ed., R.T.(R)(CT), RDMS, FASRT.

Dr. Mattie Tabron had an extraordinary career spanning more than 45 years. She started the country’s first baccalaureate degree program for radiation therapy at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was the first African American woman to be elevated to ASRT Fellow in 1987 and the first radiation therapist to serve on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists board of trustees in 1979. She is remembered for a legacy of mentorship, leadership and advancement of the profession.

Bettye Wilson dedicated her career to education, mentorship and service to others. She was an associate professor emerita at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, served as president of the UAB African American Faculty Association and contributed to the UAB Commission on the Status of Women. Her contributions reflect a legacy of service and excellence to the profession and within the ASRT community.
