Since certification examinations are required to be practice related, ARRT periodically conducts a job analysis to make certain that the certification examination content specifications and the clinical requirements remain comprehensive, accurate, and fair. ARRT, with the help of the professional community, reviews the certification documents every five years. The ARRT Board of Trustees recently approved changes to the following documents, which go into effect on February 1, 2027.
OVERVIEW OF MAJOR CHANGES TO THE CONTENT SPECIFICATIONS
Patient Care
Review pertinent medical history, communication with patient during procedure and CT simulation compliance were added.
Safety
Mechanical safety check replaced rotation check.
Procedures
3D and 4D simulations and electronic medical device were added in the Treatment Volume Localization section.
Fusion with outside diagnostic studies was removed from the Prescription and Dose Calculation section.
Chemotherapy was expanded to systemic therapy (e.g., chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy) in the treatment section.
TBI and TSE/TBE were added to the treatment section.
Urgent situation responses replaced emergency situation in the treatment section.
OVERVIEW OF THE MAJOR CHANGES TO THE DIDACTIC AND CLINICAL COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
CPR certified was changed to BLS or ACLS certified in the General Patient Care Procedures.
Assisting with O2 administration was added to the General Patient Care Procedures.
Motion management (e.g., surface guidance, respiratory gating fiducial tracking, breath hold, abdomen compression) was added to Participatory Procedures.
Two separate breast radiation treatment procedures: tangents with supraclavicular and tangents with supraclavicular and posterior axilla boost were changed to one radiation treatment procedure: tangents with nodal treatment (e.g., supraclavicular, posterior axilla boost).
Breast IMRT or VMAT radiation treatment procedure was added.
