Since certification examinations are required to be practice related, ARRT periodically conducts a job analysis to make certain that the certification examination content specifications and the clinical requirements remain comprehensive, accurate, and fair. ARRT, with the help of the professional community, reviews the certification documents every five years. The ARRT Board of Trustees recently approved changes to the following documents, which go into effect on February 1, 2027.
OVERVIEW OF MAJOR CHANGES TO THE CONTENT SPECIFICATIONS
Patient Care
Medical equipment malfunctions, patient comfort and modesty, and communication of critical findings to the health care team were added.
Local effects (e.g., infiltration) and emergency medications were added to the pharmacology section.
Safety
Short-term versus long-term exposure was added to the biological effects of radiation section.
Image Production
The informatics section was updated.
Procedures
Sequestration and radiochromatography were removed in the radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals section.
Neuroendocrine and adrenal imaging were moved from the endocrine section to the tumor section.
PET/CT was removed from the bone section.
On Attachment A, some of the less commonly used radiopharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals were removed. Several new radiopharmaceuticals were added.
OVERVIEW OF THE MAJOR CHANGES TO THE DIDACTIC AND CLINICAL COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
CPR certified was changed to BLS or ACLS certified in the General Patient Care Procedures.
Vital Signs – Pulse Oximetry was added to the General Patient Care Procedures.
CT scanner (air calibration and QC phantom) was added to the Quality Control Procedures.
Bone was removed from the PET or PET/CT section.
Adrenal and Other (e.g., Ga-67 citrate) were removed from the Tumor section. Adrenal and neuroendocrine procedures can be counted in the PET/CT Tumor section or the Other Planar or Whole Body section (depending on how they are done).
Tumor (Other, e.g., Neuroendocrine) was added to the PET or PET/CT section.
Hepatic Artery Perfusion Study (HAPS) was added to the SPECT or SPECT/CT section.
Hepatic Artery Perfusion Study (HAPS) was added to the Other Planar or Whole Body section.
Prostate (e.g., Lu-177 Pluvicto) was added to the Therapy section.
The minimum number of required procedures increased from 25 to 26.
