(July 28, 2025) — The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is proud to introduce a new credential: Imaging Assistant, Magnetic Resonance, I.A.(MR)(ARRT). This credential is designed to support Registered Technologists (R.T.s) by preparing qualified individuals to assist in MR environments—enhancing safety, improving workflow, and elevating patient care.

The Imaging Assistant, Magnetic Resonance credential marks a significant step forward in ARRT’s vision to uphold excellence in the profession. Imaging assistants will play a vital role in MR Level 2 safety, patient care, and positioning, but will not perform imaging or scanning. Their presence will help reduce errors and allow technologists to focus on complex imaging tasks.

“This new credential reflects our commitment to innovation and excellence," said ARRT CEO Liana Watson, D.M., R.T.(R)(M)(S)(BS)(ARRT). “As MRI scanning services continue to expand rapidly, the demand for trained on-site assistants has become increasingly urgent. Teleradiology and remote scanning capabilities are reshaping healthcare delivery, making it more essential than ever to have qualified assistants who support patient safety.”

The Imaging Assistant, Magnetic Resonance exam is expected to launch in Fall 2026.

ARRT emphasizes that this new credential is designed to support—not replace—the expertise of MR technologists. It represents a collaborative approach to improving outcomes and efficiency in MR imaging environments. This initiative is part of ARRT’s broader strategy to advance exceptional patient care delivered by trained, qualified professionals.
