Updated Vascular Sonography Documents

Since certification examinations are required to be practice related, ARRT periodically conducts a job analysis to make certain that the certification examination content specifications and the clinical requirements remain comprehensive, accurate, and fair. ARRT, with the help of the professional community, reviews the certification documents every five years. The ARRT Board of Trustees recently approved changes to the following documents, which go into effect on January 1, 2024.

OVERVIEW OF MAJOR CHANGES TO THE CONTENT SPECIFICATIONS

Additional content was added in the Patient Care section.

Real time imaging and teleradiology were added to the Image Production section.

Pelvic varices, palmar arch, upper extremity digital, post exercise testing, toe brachial index (TBI), line position, and vein ablations were removed from the Procedures section.

Radial artery mapping was added to the Procedures section.

Incidental abnormal findings was added under the Focus of Questions in the Procedures section.

The total number of scored questions remains the same. The number of pilot questions increased from 40 to 50 questions.

OVERVIEW OF THE MAJOR CHANGES TO THE DIDACTIC AND CLINICAL COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

Ergonomic evaluation was added to the mandatory scanning techniques list.

Some of the previously listed individual vessels were combined into major procedures. They include the abdomen, right upper quadrant, and renal procedures.

An appendix was added that lists required and optional vessels to be included with these procedures.

Combining some of the procedures decreases the minimum number of procedures to be demonstrated from 58 to 18. The number of vessels to be demonstrate competence remains at a similar level since one procedure may include up to six mandatory vessels.

Up to three eligible procedures may be simulated using a volunteer. Eligible procedures that can be simulated are indicated on the chart.
