Updated Vascular Sonography Clinical Experience Requirements

Since certification examinations are required to be practice-related, ARRT periodically conducts a job analysis to make certain that the certification examination content specifications and the clinical requirements remain comprehensive, accurate, and fair. ARRT, with the help of the professional community, reviews the certification documents approximately every five years. The ARRT Board of Trustees approved changes to the following document, which goes into effect on May 26, 2021.

OVERVIEW OF THE MAJOR CHANGES TO THE CLINICAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • The total minimum number of repetitions required increased from 914 to 1,120. One patient may be used for documentation of several procedures.
  • The minimum number of required repetitions for some procedures changed.
  • The number of required different elective procedures increased from 14 to 19 procedures out of 36 procedures.
  • At least 50% of mandatory and elective repetitions must be demonstrated on patients.
  • The following previously elective procedures became mandatory procedures: renal arterial, renal venous, subclavian arterial, axillary arterial, brachial arterial, radial arterial, and calf veins.
  • Hepatic arterial, previously a mandatory procedure, was changed to an elective procedure.
  • The following are new mandatory procedures: external iliac arterial, dorsalis pedis, and external venous.
  • Posterior tibial or anterior tibial or peroneal arterial, previously one counted as procedure, was split into three separate mandatory procedures.
  • Ankle-brachial index (ABI) or segmental pressure-lower extremities was split into two separate elective procedures.
  • The following are new elective procedures: brachiocephalic arterial, brachiocephalic venous, toe-brachial index (TBI), photoplethysmography (PPG), post endarterectomy, vein ablation, and pseudoaneurysm treatment (compression or guided thrombin injection).
  • The following procedures were removed: tibioperoneal trunk, digital pressure (stress/pressure testing), and angioplasty (post interventional procedure).
