ARRT Seeks Comments On Proposed Proton Beam Radiation Therapy Documents

As a leading healthcare credentialing organization, ARRT monitors the job tasks performed by technologists in medical imaging, interventional procedures, and radiation therapy. When warranted, we explore opportunities for developing new recognitions to match the changing medical landscape. 

Currently, ARRT is considering a new recognition in Proton Beam Radiation Therapy. As part of the process, we formed a Proton Beam Radiation Therapy Practice Analysis Advisory Committee (composed of proton beam radiation therapy subject matter experts). The committee sent a survey to 1,000 radiation therapists to determine what tasks they typically perform when working in proton beam radiation therapy.

Based on the survey responses, we’ve created draft documents for Proton Beam Radiation Therapy Body of Knowledge and Clinical Standards and Requirements. Our goal is to produce comprehensive, accurate, and fair documents that:

  • Cover the knowledge, cognitive skills, and psychomotor skills required for radiation therapists working in proton beam radiation therapy facilities,
  • Include only topics that relate directly to clinical activities those therapists perform

Since we propose that only radiation therapists should be eligible for the Proton Beam Radiation Therapy recognition, we didn’t include many of the topics that are covered and tested in the Radiation Therapy credential.
