Your Volunteer Work Helps Make Our Exams Possible

ARRT relies on subject matter experts to make decisions on the content of examinations and assessments. From committee appointments to item writing, the efforts of volunteers are essential to our work.

ARRT Volunteers Say It’s a Fulfilling Experience

Raven Boykin, R.T.(R)(MR)(ARRT), and Cindy Siperly, R.T.(R)(M)(ARRT), are two such volunteers. Boykin started as an item writer in 2017 and began a four-year term on the MRI exam committee in 2018. Siperly served on the Mammography standard setting committee and volunteers on the Mammography exam committee. She also periodically reviews new exam items.

Boykin says the work elevates the profession. “The work was fulfilling and helped me keep current on my knowledge of physics, which many techs forget once they’ve been on the job for a few years,” Boykin says. “I love the physics of MRI, so having a group of people to regularly review and discuss these topics with was rewarding.”

Siperly echoes Boykin’s enthusiasm about the experience. “The volunteer experience with ARRT has been amazing,” she says. “I’ve enjoyed it so much that at the end of my term with my current committee, I'll be looking for another way to volunteer with ARRT.” She adds that ARRT’s staff is professional and kind. “They express their gratitude in many ways. It’s nice to feel so appreciated!” she says.

She adds that the work is important because it’s performed by people “in the trenches,” with special knowledge of the profession.

Boykin says that volunteer work showcases people’s passion. “Work from volunteers is special because they actually care deeply about the subject. You can't always get the same level of results from people who are simply exchanging work for pay.”

Both Boykin and Siperly recommend volunteering with ARRT. “You feel like you’re creating a positive effect on the entire community you come from,” Boykin says. Siperly adds: “I’ve volunteered often in my life, and I can say that my experience with the ARRT has far surpassed any other. I highly recommend volunteering for this organization.”
