Helping Students Succeed: Takeaways for Educators

Julie Beaudoin, MBA, R.T.(T)(ARRT), Manager of Education Requirements at ARRT, shared practical guidance to help educators support students throughout their ARRT certification and registration journey. Below are a few key takeaways from each topic area that educators can apply immediately to improve student preparedness and support success.  

Student Verification  

• Student verification is a two-step process: first approving the student's ARRT account request and later verifying program completion and degree conferral.  
• Students benefit from creating ARRT accounts early in their program, giving them time to become familiar with the dashboard, Message Center, and credential maintenance tools.  
• Account information errors should generally be corrected rather than rejected. Accounts should only be rejected if the individual is not a student in the program.  

Curriculum Support Resources  

• The Educator Website (Ed Web) includes reports and tools that support accreditation reviews, curriculum evaluation, and program improvement efforts.  
• The Technical Appendix can help educators interpret exam statistics and psychometric data to better understand student performance trends.  
• Exam section-level performance data can guide targeted curriculum and instructional improvements.  

Exam Accommodations  

• Exam accommodations are designed to provide equal access and are evaluated individually based on documented needs.  
• A diagnosis alone does not automatically qualify a candidate for accommodations; functional limitations must also be demonstrated.  
• Accommodations approved in an academic setting may differ from those approved for the ARRT certification exam.

Pathways for Candidates Seeking Requalification  

• Candidates lose eligibility if they do not pass the exam within three attempts or three years or fail to establish eligibility within three years of program completion.  
• Requalifying candidates must meet all initial eligibility requirements again, including completing an ARRT-verified educational program.  
• Creating a certificate pathway for requalification can provide a practical option for helping former students regain eligibility  

Helpful Reports Available on the Educator Website  

• The Passing Candidates Report provides a historical record of students who passed the ARRT exam within a selected date range.  
• The Candidate Exam Results Report provides first-attempt exam performance data, including scaled scores, section scores, and percentile rankings.  
• The Annual Program Summary Report can be used to evaluate pass rates and average scores across a calendar year.  
• The National Comparison Report helps identify curriculum strengths and weaknesses by comparing program performance with national averages over multiple years.  
• The Applicant Status Report allows programs to track where students are in the application and eligibility process.  

Across all topics, one message was clear: educator involvement remains one of the most important factors in helping students successfully achieve ARRT certification and registration. As Beaudoin noted, “Program directors are essential in ensuring that candidates successfully meet all ARRT requirements."
